Mutoh Ruiko

The tragedy of the Chernobyl nuclear accident and her sister’s leukemia contributed to Ruiko’s continuous efforts in developing non-violent grassroots community activism mainly in Rokkasho village and Fukushima prefecture.

Ruiko opened a café, “Kirara”, in 2003 and was practicing a lifestyle based on renewable energy and the blessings of nature, when the 2011 nuclear accident turned her life upside down and brought her back into frontline activism.

At present, she leads the complainants for prosecution of the Fukushima nuclear accident against TEPCO for its legal responsibility and actively publicizes the current situation of Fukushima area in cooperation with local communities and networks across the country.
